Today Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka attended a ceremony marking Liberation Day and the 72nd anniversary of the end of World War II at the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill in Prague.

Defence Minister Martin Stropnický, Chief of the General Staff Josef Bečvář and other senior Czech Army figures attended the main event on Monday morning. National flag will be hoisted and historical standards brought in to the accompaniment of the Czech national anthem. This will be followed by the ceremonial act of laying wreaths.

In the afternoon President Miloš Zeman will name new generals, including the country’s first woman general, Lenka Šmerdová.

Commemorative events marking the anniversary of the war’s end are held at several places in Prague and in other Czech towns.
