Up to 1300 kilometers, from Plzen to Rome. The world-famous Czech brewery Plzensky Prazdroj, along with the citizens of Plzen, sent a special Easter batch of their beer to the Vatican.

Brewers prepared this special Easter brew for the seventh time in history, based on stories from the 19th century when the Pope had ordered Czech beer to improve his ill health. In addition, Pope Francis will receive an unusual gift – a ten kilogram handmade bell, from a bell foundry in Slovakia.

The symbolic 2017 bottles of the golden lager have been prepared since February 27, when the raw materials were blessed by Pilsner Bishop Tomas Holub. “Traditionally, the number of the bottles sent to the Vatican is the same as the year in which they are sent. This year it is 2017. Our lager found its way to Rome 114 years ago. In the past, Pope Leo XIII had it shipped there since his doctor recommended it to him as a medicine. It is a great honor for us that our beer is part of such important events as the Easter celebrations in the Vatican and the beatification of two of the most important personalities in world history,” said senior brew master Václav Berka.

The bell

Bell founder Michal Trvalec and his son from Žarnovická Huta have been creating this special bell for three months. The bell measures 27 centimeters, weighs 10 kilograms and is made of bronze. Michal Trvalec made the bell with traditional methods that began in the 15th century.
