The consultation of the document is possible in the historical Generali insurance archives in Trieste (Italy). “I know German, Czech, French and English but in these two languages, I’m out of practice”.
“I was born on July 3rd, 1883 in Prague; I attended up to the fourth class the Altstädter Volksschule; I entered then in the Altstädter Deutsches Staatsgymnasium; at 18 I began my studies at the Deutsche Karl-Ferdinands Universität in Prague. After giving the last exam, on 1st April 1906, I joined as a trainee in the law firm of Richard Löwy. In June, I graduated in law”.
These are the words of Franz Kafka in his resume, sent in 1907 to the headquarters of Prague Assicurazioni Generali. This document (which was displayed last year during the exhibition “The Great Trieste from 1891 to 1914. Portrait of a city”), can be consulted in the archives in Trieste.
Kafka worked for Generali for about ten months, from October 1907 to July 1908, in the building on the corner between Jindřiška and Wenceslas Square.
