New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio has instituted a “Václav Havel Day”, which will take place on 28th September.

This day has been chosen because is the name day of the former president, and is also a national holiday in the Czech Republic, honouring the legendary founder of the country, St. Wenceslas.

According to the Czech Consulate of New York City, the commemoration will feature three days of celebrations, the unveiling of Havel’s bust created by Mary Šeborová at the Columbia University campus, performances of the President’s plays and a celebratory dinner.

The Consulate General also plans its own solemn activities at the Bohemian National Hall to celebrate the event.
