Japanese brewing company Asahi completed its takeover of the Czech brewery Pilsner Urquell on Friday, Asahi said in a statement.

Asahi paid around 7.3 billion euros for several beer brands from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania that previously belonged to the SABMiller portfolio.

The sale was a condition stipulated by EU antitrust authorities in May of last year to approve the merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller.

Pilsner Urquell is based in Plzeň, the former industrial city of West Bohemia where the first beer with a bottom-fermented brewing process was produced in 1842.

The traditional Czech beer culture will continue to be treasured and maintained, Asahi’s head of European business Tom Verhaegen told CTK Agency.

“Pilsner Urquell and Asahi are connected not just by respect for tradition, but also by passion for innovation,” Verhaegen said.
