The women’s javelin finals were held last evening: Sara Kolak of Croatia won the gold, with Sunette Viljoen of South Africa winning silver and Czech Barbora Špotáková taking the bronze medal.

The 21-year-old Croat set a national record with her fourth attempt of 66.18 metres.

Špotáková, the Olympic champion in 2008 and 2012, was one of four women who arrived in Rio hoping to be the first to win three consecutive golds in an individual event.
