In a branch of Tesco in Smíchov, staff were attaching security tags to butter packaging following theft concerns. A spokesman for Tesco said that the butter was only tagged temporarily and its packaging has now returned to normal.

This may seem like an unorthodox precaution to protect blocks of butter. However, as butter prices have risen sharply in the past couple of months so have instances of butter theft.

According to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ), the average price of butter has increased by 45.5% over the past year. Now a block of 250g butter is selling for 60 Kč. The increase is set to continue over the festive season, as an EU-wide dairy shortage is driving prices up. People are concerned about the fate of their baked goods over Christmastime!
