The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) recently published the World University Rankings 2016, adopting six indicators:

  • number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals;
  • number of Highly Cited Researchers;
  • number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science;
  • number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index;
  • Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index;
  • per capita performance.

Charles University is the only Czech one included in the list, ranked in 201th place

Of the top 10 universities, eight are from the United States and two are from UK. There is only one Asian university in the top 20 — University of Tokyo.

The US has the maximum number of universities with 137, followed by China (54), Germany (38), UK (37), Australia (23), France (22), Canada (19), Japan (16), and Switzerland (8).
